A fistula often occurs from an anal gland that has developed a pus-filled infection. Fistula can also occur with certain conditions, such as Crohn's disease or it can happen after radiation treatment for cancer. Anal canal trauma and surgery can also cause anal fistula. An anal fistula is usually the result of perianal abscess that develops over an infected anal gland. Chronic inflammation and infection cause erosion and abscess formation of pus.
The pus needs drainage, so it can create its own drainage path through an opening in the skin.ย
