Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic or functional surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the eyelids or correct issues affecting their function. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on the individual’s needs.

Reasons for Blepharoplasty:

1) Cosmetic Reasons:

  • Remove excess skin or fat that causes droopy upper eyelids.
  • Reduce puffiness or “bags” under the eyes.
  • Improve the overall appearance of tired or aged eyes.

2) Functional Reasons:

  • Correct impaired vision caused by drooping eyelids.
  • Address eyelid malposition issues (e.g., ectropion or entropion).

Types of Blepharoplasty:

1) Upper Eyelid Surgery:

  • Targets sagging skin that may block vision or affect appearance.
  • Often involves removal of skin, muscle, and sometimes fat.

2) Lower Eyelid Surgery:

  • Focuses on reducing puffiness and under-eye bags.
  • May involve fat repositioning or removal, as well as tightening of the skin.

Procedure Overview:

  • Duration: Typically 1–3 hours, depending on the complexity.
  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
  • Techniques:
  • Incisions are made along natural creases to minimize visible scarring.
  • Excess skin, fat, and muscle are removed or repositioned.
  • The incisions are closed with sutures, adhesive, or surgical tape.

Recovery:

  • Initial Healing: Swelling and bruising for 1–2 weeks.
  • Full Recovery: Usually within 4–6 weeks.
  • Aftercare:
  • Use cold compresses to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks.
  • Follow the surgeon’s instructions for wound care.

Risks and Complications:

  • Infection or bleeding.
  • Dry or irritated eyes.
  • Difficulty closing eyes fully.
  • Scarring or asymmetry.
  • Rarely, vision issues (e.g., blurred vision or loss of sight).

If you are considering blepharoplasty, it is important to consult with a qualified plastic or eye surgeon to discuss expectations, risks, and desired outcomes. Let me know if you’d like more detailed guidance or resources!
