Pre and post Surgery
MTP, or Medical Termination of Pregnancy, whether through medication or surgery, is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified health care provider. However, like any medical procedure, it comes with certain risks and requires proper pre- and post-care.
Pre-Surgery Care
- Consultation and Evaluation: It is important to have a medical evaluation, including an ultrasound, to determine the status of the pregnancy and discuss the options. The doctor will also review your medical history.
- Informed Consent: You should be fully aware of the risks, benefits and alternatives to the procedure.
- Lab Tests: Blood work may be done to check hemoglobin levels and other factors.
- Medication: Sometimes, antibiotics are given to prevent infection.
During the Procedure
- Medication MTP: It is usually done with a combination of drugs such as mifepristone and misoprostol for up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.
- Surgical MTP (D&C or vacuum aspiration): It is a short procedure usually performed under local or general anesthesia in later stages or as an alternative to medication.
Post-Surgery Care
- Rest: Rest is necessary after the procedure. Avoid strenuous activities for a few days.
- Monitor for Complications: Watch for signs of complications such as heavy bleeding, fever, or severe pain. If any of these occur, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
- Follow-Up: A follow-up visit is usually scheduled to ensure that the pregnancy was terminated successfully and that there were no complications.
- Emotional Support: It is normal to experience that level of emotion. Consider counseling or support if needed. Risks
Though generally safe, MTP carries potential risks such as:
- Infection
- Heavy bleeding
- Incomplete abortion requiring further medical attention
•Damage to the uterus or other organs (rare in surgical procedures)
It is important to ensure that the procedure is performed by a licensed and experienced healthcare professional in a healthcare setting.
